Youth Homelessness Prevention

Adriano’s research examines the conditions that place young people at risk of homelessness before crisis becomes visible. This includes hidden homelessness, youth in and out of school, child protection pathways, poverty, family instability, and the ways institutions can either miss or interrupt early signs of risk.

Schools are one of the few universal systems that interact with young people during the period when homelessness risk often first appears. This research explores schools as early detection hubs while refusing to place the burden of structural failure on individual teachers alone.

From lived and professional experience to teacher education research.

Adriano Battista’s research began by examining the experiences of precarious and homeless youth in and out of schools through autoethnographic research and case studies. His current work now examines how pre-service teacher education prepares, or fails to prepare, future educators to recognize and respond to poverty, trauma, housing instability, and youth homelessness.

Across this work, he explores how education systems can become stronger sites of early intervention, upstream prevention, and school-based support for vulnerable youth.
